Tallmadge resident Brandon L. Franklin, an Uber driver, has been charged with one count of sexual battery in connection with an alleged incident involving a female passenger in Akron last month.

According to information provided by Capt. Daniel Zampelli of the Akron Police Department, a 22-year-old woman told police she had been out drinking with friends on March 25 when she became intoxicated. A friend arranged a ride home for the woman via Uber, the police report says, and the woman alleges she awoke in her East Akron home to "her Uber driver sexually assaulting her."

Zampelli says Franklin "is a recognized Uber driver." The 33-year-old suspect turned himself in to police on April 11 around 10 p.m. He was arraigned on the charge, a third-degree felony, in Akron Municipal Court April 13. A court spokesperson said a not guilty plea was entered on Franklin's behalf and bond was set at 10 percent of $50,000. Franklin remained in custody in the Summit County Jail at press time and a protection order has been put in place for the alleged victim. Franklin's next court appearance is scheduled for April 28 at 8 a.m. before Judge Kandi O'Connor.
