Police investigate two Norton Drive home burglaries

Tallmadge -- Police investigated two reports of burglary involving Norton Drive residences last week that may be related.

On Oct. 25, a Norton Drive couple told police while they were out of town between Oct. 21 and 25, someone broke into their residence through a back window, removing a 32-inch flat screen TV valued at $600, a gold chain valued at $350, a white gold men's ring valued at $250, a $100 gold wedding band, and coins from various countries valued at $50. Damage to the window was estimated at $250.

On Oct. 24, a Norton Drive man told police sometime between 8 p.m. Oct. 23 and 2:22 a.m. Oct. 24, someone broke into his residence by prying open the sliding glass door, removing his $1,200 TV, a $100 ring and a silver and diamond wedding band valued at $1,500. Damage to the sliding door frame was estimated at $50.

Police believe the incidents may be related and are investigating.

Robbery

Oct. 23. Akron man charged: Police arrested a 27-year-old Akron man and charged him with robbery after the security officer at a South Avenue business told police she saw the suspect remove two video games valued at $40 and two memory cards for a portable game system with a total value of $60 from their packaging and place them on his person, leaving the store without paying for the items. According to the report, the security officer attempted to stop the suspect in the parking lot, but was pushed aside while he drove off in a green van. Police were able to obtain the vehicle's license plate number, and were subsequently able to identify the driver and issue a warrant for his arrest.

Breaking and entering

Oct. 21. Honda 4-wheeler stolen: A South Alling Road man told police sometime between 11 a.m. Oct. 19 and 6 a.m. Oct. 21, someone removed his $3,500 Honda 4-wheeler from an unlocked shed in the back yard of his property.

Theft

Oct. 26. GPS unit, credit cards taken: A Juniata Road woman told police sometime overnight, someone entered her unlocked vehicle, which was parked in her driveway, removing a $250 GPS unit and two credit cards. Police advised the woman to call the credit card companies to cancel the accounts.

Oct. 24.Electronics removed from vehicle: A Beechwood Drive man told police sometime between 11 p.m. Oct. 23 and 3:26 p.m. Oct. 24, someone entered his vehicle, removing two iPods valued at $200, a $400 GPS unit, a $500 amp, two subwoofers valued at $880, a $50 stereo faceplate and a $50 radar detector. According to the report, the vehicle owner told police his car was locked, but the weather stripping on the passenger side window was "messed up."

Oct. 23. GPS unit stolen from vehicle: A Brittain Circle man told police sometime between 12:15 and 12:46 a.m., someone broke the window of his vehicle, which was parked outside his apartment, removing a $200 GPS unit from inside. Damage was estimated at $100.

Oct. 21. Laptop, wallet, GPS unit taken: A Tallmadge man told police sometime between 6:30 and 8:40 p.m., someone smashed the window of his vehicle while it was parked at a West Avenue address. According to the report, a $1,000 laptop and leather case, a $50 wallet containing identification and credit cards and a $400 GPS unit were removed from inside. Damage to the window was estimated at $200.

Oct. 21. $1,000 worth of scaffolding removed: A South Munroe Road woman told police sometime between 2:10 and 2:20 p.m., someone drove into her yard, loaded $1,000 worth of scaffolding into the bed of a truck and left by driving through her back yard. According to the report, she was unable to obtain a license plate number. Police units checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Oct. 21. GPS unit, change taken: A Lauren Lane woman told police sometime overnight, someone entered her vehicle, which she told police was possibly unlocked, removing a $300 GPS unit and $5 in change from inside.

Oct. 21. CDs removed from vehicle: A Lauren Lane woman told police sometime overnight, and for the fourth time this year, someone entered her vehicle, removing $250 worth of CDs. According to the report, there were no signs of forced entry.

Oct. 19. Theft of cold medication: Police arrested a 49-year-old Tallmadge man and charged him with theft after the loss prevention officer at a South Avenue business told police she saw him conceal two boxes of cold medicine valued at $10 on his person and leave the store without paying for the items. The suspect was detained until police arrived. He was released on a personal recognizance bond.

Criminal damage

Oct. 24. Obscenities spray painted: A Brandview Road woman told police sometime overnight, someone used spray paint and aerosol hair dye to write obscenities on her vehicle, mailbox, yard and trees. According to the report, smashed eggs were also found inside the woman's mailbox. The estimate for cleanup was $500.
