Tallmadge Lutheran Church will begin the celebration of its 50th anniversary Jan. 10 with a guest pastor at the 8 and 10 a.m. worship services. Delivering the sermon will be the Rev. David Meyer, a vicar and first clergymen to serve the church when it was a mission congregation from 1959 to 1960. Meyer's sermon, "Look Back so that we may Look Ahead," will be the first of a series of six monthly worship services by ministers who have served the church, located at 759 East Ave. A seminary student at the time, Meyer was assigned from Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cuyahoga Falls in 1959 to organize the congregation, which first met at Tallmadge Junior High School. He graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 1961 and first served at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa, from 1961 to 1964. He later served as pastor of churches in Wooster and Mt. Hope before accepting divine calls to Iowa and Wisconsin. Meyer served at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa, Wis. from 1968 to 1973 and served for 24 years at St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin, Wis., until his retirement in January 1997. He then concluded his ministerial career at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in West Bend, Wis., returning to Cuyahoga Falls in 2006, where he and his wife, Clara, now reside. Meyer and Clara Feucht were married at the church of his vicarage, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cuyahoga Falls June 18, 1961. The have three sons, Paul of New York City; Daniel of Canton, N.C.; and James of Chicago. Tallmadge Lutheran Church was chartered in January 1960 with 34 members. A member of the Missouri Synod, it currently has 400 congregants. The church will continue its 50th anniversary celebration with past and present ministers delivering sermons Feb. 7 (Rev. Dr. Peter Mealwitz), March 14 (Rev. John Eiwen), April 11 (Rev. Joshua Schoon) and May 9 (current pastor the Rev. Dr. David Zachrich). The first unit of the church was built in 1960 and dedicated in December of that year. A renovated new sanctuary was dedicated and a new educational wing and offices were added in 1972. The current sanctuary was completed and dedicated in 1989, and in 1999, a new educational wing, gymnasium and kitchen were added. The 7.9-acre site of the church is also home to a city Little League Baseball field and the new Tallmadge Community Gardens, and is neighbors with the Tallmadge Community Center and Tallmadge High School.
