Manda's Message

You don't often hear, "I hate Christmas" or "I hate Easter" or hear someone expressing contempt for any other holidays we celebrate throughout the year. Why is it that anytime someone mentions Valentine's Day, the reaction is most often, "ugh, I hate Valentine's Day," followed by an eye roll or something close to that?

I think people forget the holiday is about the exact opposite feeling they are expressing -- it's about love!

I usually defend the holiday more than I celebrate it some years, unfortunately, but I will never stop expressing my love, especially on Feb. 14. Roll your eyes all you want ... I'm still going to bake cupcakes with heart sprinkles and send cards and say "I love you."

If the majority of people respond negatively to the holiday, then why is it still celebrated? Why are there rows of red and pink heart-covered cards, restaurants advertising special dinners and piles of bags of conversation heart candies everywhere?

My best friend Lucille said the holiday is for the "droves of hopeless romantics, like you." As if it was supposed to sound negative. Maybe I am a hopeless romantic, but I certainly don't take her comment as a put-down.

There are many forms of love and on Valentine's Day and I intend on letting all of the people in my life know that I love them. It could be a gesture of love to a friend, coworker, a neighbor, family members or significant other.

This year, a coworker of my mother's, Jackie Lamb, was a stranger to me until a few weeks ago. She created a beautiful artistic Valentine's Day decoration for me because she knew I liked the holiday. The card on the package read, "For the girl whose favorite holiday is Valentine's Day."

How could anyone hate a holiday that motivates someone to do something like that? A day that makes my heart swell and overflow with feelings of love is OK with me.

I hope my views as a hopeless romantic are seen as sincere and are contagious. It must be contagious, because Cupid's arrow has been striking since 496 AD and messages of love carry on today.

But, what do I know? I'm just a hopeless romantic.

I hope someone does something to make your heart swell Feb. 14. Happy Valentine's Day!
