by April Helms Special Products Editor The road to love is never smooth. But as seen in the charming story in "Last Train to Nibroc," on the Actors' Summit stage this month, it is worth it. In the play, a young, discharged soldier and a conservative schoolmarm meet by chance on a train ride in late December of 1940. They strike up a tentative friendship after finding a surprising amount of common ground and agree to meet again. The story spans three years, as circumstance brings them together and misunderstandings and their differences drive them apart. Actors' Summit veterans Keith Stevens and Shani Ferry bring to life the characters of Raleigh and May. They deftly cover the gamut of emotions, from the heartwrenching ending of the second scene to the play's lighter moments. Stevens' expressions in a particularly funny scene toward the end of the play are priceless. Ferry's character has a fiery, no-nonsense side and a steely resolution when put to the test. Constance Thackaberry directs the production. "I think I was really blessed to have two fantastic actors to work with," Thackaberry said. "I just really love the story. I read it about eight years ago and fell in love with it." The play seemed popular with the opening night audience on Feb. 12. "I thought it was very well acted," said Sandy Rexroad of Hudson. "I enjoyed the '40s music a lot. I really got into the depth of the plot. The nostalgia of the era and what went on in the war was beautifully portrayed." Ticket and show information "Last Train to Nibroc" will run through Feb. 28. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at the theater, 86 Owen Brown St. in Hudson. Tickets are $29 on Fridays and Saturdays, $26 on Thursdays and Sundays, with seniors receiving a $3 discount at regular Thursday and Sunday performances. Additional discounts are available to groups of 10 or more. All full-time students (with ID) pay $7 at all performances. Season subscriptions are still available.
