From March 13 through April 17, Summit Artspace Gallery will present Narratives, an exhibition of paintings with elements of storytelling, featuring three local artists of varying ages and styles. Featured artists are Frank Bell White, John Sokol and Sean O'Donnell. White, age 78, is a self-trained artist whose work depicts African American life in a literal style. Sokol, a 1973 M.A. graduate of Kent State University, bases his more abstract works on myths and ancient religions. A student at University of Akron, O'Donnell, from Cuyahoga Falls, combines the abstract with the figurative inviting the viewer to imagine a personal story. The public is invited to a free meet-the-artists reception on March 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. On April 10, John Sokol will give a workshop on painting with natural materials. This free workshop, designed for older teens and adults, is from 1 to 3 p.m. To register, e-mail psargent@neo.rr.com. Summit Artspace, a project of the Arts Alliance in cooperation with Summit County government, is located in a historic downtown Akron building at 140 E. Market Street, one block east of the Akron Art Museum. It is dedicated to displaying local art and presents seven exhibitions per year. Admission and parking are free. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday noon to 5 p.m. The gallery will also be open 5 to 9 p.m. on April 3 for the First Saturday Artwalk. A city of Akron trolley will transport people between arts and entertainment venues along East Market Street and in the Northside District. This is a free event. The Akron Area Arts Alliance is a non-profit arts advocacy group. Its membership includes 48 organizations plus 65 artists and arts supporters. The gallery is supported by the Akron Community Foundation, Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, Corbin Foundation, Welty Family Foundation and Ohio Arts Council. Comments
