The Rev. John Eiwen, retired pastor of Akron's Zion Lutheran Church, will be the guest minister March 14, when Tallmadge Lutheran Church observes the third in a series of 50th anniversary worship services. Eiwen will preach at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services on the topic, "Bridge Builders for Christ," based on 2 Corinthians 5:16-21. Eiwen, who retired as senior pastor of Zion in January 2009 after nearly 40 years serving the downtown Akron church, also served as vacancy pastor at Tallmadge Lutheran from 1979-80. He will be the third Lutheran minister to deliver a sermon at Tallmadge Lutheran during the church's 2010 celebration of its 50th anniversary. The church, which is located at 759 East Ave., will culminate a series of six guest sermons with a special combined service May 23 at Tallmadge High School. The Rev. Dr. David Zachrich has been the senior pastor of the church for the past 17 years. Eiwen has been in the ministry at Zion Lutheran throughout his 40-year career, the past 22 as senior pastor. His first call was as assistant pastor at Zion, where he was ordained in July 1969. He then served 18 years as assistant and associate pastor before becoming senior pastor in 1987. His successor at Zion is the Rev. Joshua Schoon, who served as Tallmadge Lutheran's first associate pastor from 2003-06. Schoon, in fact, will serve as guest minister April 11. Eiwen graduated from Concordia Preparatory School, Bronxville, N.Y., in 1960. He earned degrees from Concordia Junior College, also in Bronxville, in 1962 and Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, Ind., in 1964. He then attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, where he received a master's of divinity degree in 1968 and a master's of sacred theology degree in 1969. In 1968, Eiwen married Bay Village native Pat Huge and they have resided here since 1969. The Eiwens have two daughters and a son. Tallmadge Lutheran Church was chartered in January 1960 with 34 members. A member of the Missouri Synod, it currently has more than 400 congregants. The first unit of Tallmadge Lutheran was built in 1960 and dedicated in December of that year. A renovated sanctuary was dedicated and a new educational wing and offices were added in 1972. The current sanctuary was completed and dedicated in 1989, and a new educational wing, gymnasium and kitchen were added in 1999. Comments
