In recent years, Tallmadge High School has witnessed several athletes reach the state competition.

Two Blue Devils got to experience the ultimate stage this winter.

These two young men may want to get used to their surroundings.

That's because both standout wrestlers are only sophomores.

Lightweight stars Ed Suber and Jake Potok accomplished something that hadn't been done in recent years.

They were Tallmadge's first pair of Division II state qualifiers since 2009.

Suber made his second consecutive trip to Columbus. He placed seventh at 106 pounds after finishing one win shy of reaching the podium last season.

Potok, who competed at 132 pounds, lost both of his matches at the state competition.

However, the first-year state qualifier gained some valuable experience against Ohio's elite.

The sophomores' performances capped a stellar season for the Blue Devil grapplers, who captured their first sectional title since 1972 last month.

Tallmadge also reached the regional semifinals at the state dual-team tournament earlier in the season.

And that's not all.

The Blue Devils finished second to a very talented Aurora squad in the very strong Suburban League American Conference.

No other Tallmadge team could make the same claims the wrestlers made on the mats.

But that doesn't mean the other teams didn't have their shining moments.

Although their season ended much sooner than they liked, the Lady Blue Devils had a stellar season on the basketball court.

They were in the thick of the American Conference title race until their regular-season finale.

Despite being upset in sectional play, Tallmadge finished 18-5 and captured third in the conference with an 8-4 record.

The boys basketball team finished second in the American Conference with a 9-3 record.

The Blue Devils concluded their regular season with four wins in their last five games before falling to a very talented Akron Buchtel team in sectional play. Tallmadge finished 13-9.

Unfortunately, history did not repeat itself for a pair of teams.

After having a state qualifier the previous two years, Lady Blue Devil bowlers were shut out this season.

Sadly, that was the case for the athletes who spent their winter in the pool, too.

No swimmer received an invitation to Canton after a boys' relay team represented Tallmadge High School at the Division II state competition the previous two seasons.

Fortunately, all was not lost for the Tallmadge girls bowlers or boys swimmers.

The girls bowlers finished 5-4 and advanced to the district competition. The boys swimmers ended the season with a 7-3 record. The boys bowlers also had a winning record (7-4) this winter.

While only two athletes got a taste of the big time, it was a successful winter season for Tallmadge High School athletics.

The school on North Munroe Road hopes the success can continue once the days get longer and the sun shines brighter.

After all, there seems to be a rather intriguing rumor going around as the spring season nears.

Word on the street says the Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils have been quite comfortable on the baseball and softball diamonds over the years.
